The part most articles miss: bottled flavored green teas are a completely different product, and some test almost as acidic as cola. If your green tea comes from a bottle, that’s the section to read.

Is Green Tea Acidic? Where It Sits on the pH Scale
Approximate ranges from beverage pH measurements:

- Orange juice: roughly pH 3.3-4.2

pH is logarithmic. Each whole point represents a tenfold change in acidity, not a small step. So green tea at pH 6.5 isn’t “a bit less acidic” than cola at 2.5. It’s roughly ten thousand times less acidic. Any chart showing these as proportional bars on a 0-14 line dramatically understates the differences.
What makes tea acidic at all
Tea leaves contain small amounts of organic acids, including citric and malic, along with catechins and polyphenols. Hot water pulls these out during brewing, which is why hotter water and longer steeping both produce a slightly more acidic cup.
The effect is modest. Brewing adjustments move green tea within its narrow range; they don’t transform it.
Bottled Green Tea Is a Different Drink
This is the genuinely useful finding, and it’s the opposite of what the “green tea is gentle” framing suggests.

A large dental study measuring the pH of hundreds of commercially available beverages found that flavored bottled green teas cluster around pH 2.9 to 3.3, and one popular citrus green tea measured 2.93, which is nearly as acidic as a cola.[4]
Added citric acid is usually the reason. It’s there as a preservative and for flavor, and it takes the product from around pH 6.5 to around pH 3, which on a logarithmic scale is thousands of times more acidic. At those levels the drink sits well below the enamel erosion threshold, putting it in the same dental risk category as soda rather than tea.
If you drink bottled green tea regularly, check the ingredients for citric or ascorbic acid, use a straw, and rinse with water afterwards. Or brew your own, which is cheaper and avoids the problem entirely.
Is Green Tea Acidic Enough to Damage Your Teeth?
Tooth enamel begins to dissolve below about pH 5.5.[4] That’s the number that matters, and it’s why the distinction above is worth caring about.
Plain brewed green tea sits above that threshold, so it poses little erosion risk in normal use. Black tea sits right at the borderline. Sodas, sports drinks, fruit juices and flavored bottled teas fall well below it.
Green tea also contains naturally occurring fluoride absorbed from soil, and at least one lab study found it had a protective effect against enamel erosion, likely from the fluoride plus its plant compounds.
Contact time matters as much as pH. Sipping one cup slowly over an hour exposes your teeth far longer than drinking it in ten minutes. That’s true of any acidic drink.
Practical habits: rinse with water afterwards, don’t swish tea around your mouth, and wait 30 to 60 minutes before brushing, because enamel is temporarily softened after acid exposure, and brushing during that window causes more wear than it prevents.

Green Tea and Acid Reflux
Here’s the thing worth understanding: if green tea bothers your reflux, the acidity is probably not the culprit.
Your stomach already sits at pH 1.5 to 3.5, vastly more acidic than any tea. Adding a cup of pH 6.5 liquid does essentially nothing to that.
The likelier mechanisms:
Caffeine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve that keeps stomach contents where they belong. That’s the main one, and it’s why decaf often helps when regular tea doesn’t.
Volume. A large mug of anything distends the stomach and makes reflux more likely. Smaller amounts, more often, works better.
Temperature. Very hot liquid can irritate an already-inflamed esophagus.
Timing. Lying down within a few hours of drinking removes gravity’s help.
So if you have reflux and want to keep drinking green tea: try decaf first, keep cups smaller, let it cool a little, don’t drink it within three hours of bed, and have it with food rather than on an empty stomach. Those changes address the actual mechanisms.
And skip the lemon. It’s the one addition that genuinely does make your tea substantially more acidic, since lemon juice is around pH 2.
Green Tea Does Not Change Your Body’s pH
Blood pH is held between 7.35 and 7.45 by your kidneys and lungs, continuously and automatically. Nothing you drink shifts it meaningfully. If it did, you’d be in a medical emergency rather than a wellness discussion.
The Cleveland Clinic is direct about this: no evidence supports the idea that acidic foods create acidic body conditions or that alkaline foods prevent disease.[2]
Urine pH does change with diet, which is where the confusion starts. But that’s the system working, with your kidneys excreting what they need to in order to keep blood pH stable. It’s evidence of regulation, not of your body becoming acidic.
What genuinely matters is local contact: the pH in your mouth while you drink, and the volume hitting your stomach. Those are real. Systemic pH isn’t in play.
Brewing for a Gentler Cup
Cooler water, around 160-175°F (71-79°C) rather than boiling. This is the single biggest improvement, and it makes green tea taste markedly better too, since boiling water scalds the leaf and produces bitterness.
Shorter steeping, one to two minutes. Longer extraction pulls out more of everything, including the acids and the tannins that cause astringency.
Cold brew gives the mellowest result of all: leaves in cold water in the fridge for several hours, producing a naturally sweet, low-astringency tea.
Filtered water gives more consistent results than hard tap water.
A small amount of milk buffers acidity if you like it that way, though it may slightly reduce catechin absorption. That’s a fair trade if it’s the difference between drinking tea comfortably and not.
One thing to skip: adding baking soda to tea. It’s sometimes suggested for buffering acidity, but it adds sodium, tastes unpleasant, and solves a problem green tea doesn’t really have.
Who Should Be Careful
Most of the real cautions around green tea are about caffeine and tannins rather than acidity.
Iron absorption. Tannins bind non-heme iron, the kind in plant foods. If you’re iron-deficient, vegetarian, or taking an iron supplement, leave about an hour between tea and iron-containing meals, and pair those meals with vitamin C.
Pregnancy. ACOG guidance is to keep caffeine under 200 mg daily, counting all sources.[3]
Warfarin. Green tea contains vitamin K. Consistency matters more than avoidance, so tell your anticoagulation clinic if your intake changes substantially.
Anxiety, heart rhythm problems, or insomnia. These are caffeine issues; decaf resolves most of them.
Supplements are a separate matter. Drinking green tea is regarded as generally safe.[1] Concentrated green tea extract supplements are not the same thing: the European Food Safety Authority concluded that doses delivering 800 mg or more of EGCG daily are associated with signs of liver damage, and could not identify a dose it considered safe. Case reports include acute hepatitis and, rarely, liver failure. Stop and seek medical advice for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual fatigue, or pain in the upper right abdomen.
