Most lists of home remedies for toenail fungus treat every option as equally promising. They aren’t. Two have been studied in people and produced modest results. The rest have no human evidence for nail infections at all, and one that circulates widely is genuinely dangerous.
Here’s each one against the actual research, so you can decide what’s worth your time rather than spending a year on something that was never going to work.
- Only two home remedies have human trial data for toenail fungus: mentholated ointment (about 28% full cure in a small case series) and 100% tea tree oil (about 18% cure). Both results are modest.
- Vinegar, baking soda, garlic, and mouthwash have no clinical evidence for nail infections despite appearing on most remedy lists.
- Never soak feet in bleach, because it causes chemical burns and has no evidence of clearing fungus.
- A dark streak running lengthwise along a nail needs prompt assessment, because it can signal subungual melanoma rather than fungus.
When Home Treatment Is the Wrong Choice
Don’t self-treat if you have diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, neuropathy, or a weakened immune system. A nail infection in these situations can progress to a skin infection, ulcer, or bone infection, and reduced sensation means you may not notice. Filing or trimming a thickened nail yourself risks a wound you won’t feel.
Get same-day care for: spreading redness or warmth, red streaks up the leg, fever or chills, pus, increasing pain, or any open sore near the nail.
Get a dark streak checked promptly. A brown or black band running lengthwise along one nail, particularly if it widens or the pigment reaches the skin at the cuticle, needs assessment for subungual melanoma. That is not fungus, and treating it with tea tree oil for a year is how it gets missed.
Worth knowing too: a large share of thickened, discolored nails aren’t fungal. Trauma from running or tight shoes, nail psoriasis, and lichen planus all look similar. A nail clipping sent for testing settles it.[5]
Why Nail Fungus Resists Almost Everything
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection living in and beneath the nail plate, a dense sheet of keratin with no blood supply. Anything applied to the surface has to diffuse through that barrier to reach the infection.
This is why a substance can kill fungus reliably in a petri dish and do nothing on a nail. Most home-remedy claims rest on laboratory activity that was never tested on an actual infected toe.[3]
The second obstacle is time. Toenails grow roughly 1 to 2 mm a month, so a fully clear nail takes 9 to 12 months even when treatment works. Any remedy you commit to is a year-long commitment.
Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus, Ranked by Evidence
Mentholated chest ointment: the most studied
This is the home remedy with the strongest human data, which says more about how thin the field is than about how good it is.
A 2011 case series in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine followed 18 people applying mentholated ointment daily for 48 weeks.[1]

Five of the 18, about 28%, achieved both clinical and laboratory cure. Another 10 had partial clearance.
Read that carefully, though. Eighteen people is very small, and there was no control group, so nobody knows what plain petrolatum would have achieved. Podiatrists have pointed out that an oily ointment hydrates the nail and can make it look better without touching the infection.
Reasonable to try for an early, limited infection. It’s cheap and safe. Don’t read “28%” as a cure rate you can rely on.
Tea tree oil: one old trial, modest result
Tea tree oil has the only randomized trial among the natural options. In 1994, 100% tea tree oil was compared against 1% clotrimazole cream over six months. Tea tree oil produced laboratory cure in about 18% of participants, with clinical improvement in roughly half, comparable to clotrimazole.[2]
“Comparable to clotrimazole” sounds better than it is: clotrimazole isn’t effective for nails either. Both arms had low cure rates. It’s a real but small effect, from one trial, three decades ago.
Safety matters more here than with the ointment:
- Tea tree oil is toxic if swallowed. Keep it well out of reach of children, and away from pets, since it’s toxic to cats and dogs even applied to skin.
- Allergic contact dermatitis is common, particularly with oil that has oxidized. Old, heat-exposed, or long-opened bottles are more sensitizing. Patch test on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours.
- Stop if you get burning, spreading redness, or blistering rather than pushing through it.
Undecylenic acid: a real antifungal, wrong target
Undecylenic acid is a genuine antifungal recognized in the FDA’s over-the-counter monograph, but for skin. Using it on nails is off-label, and the monograph actually requires OTC topical antifungals to be labeled as not effective for nails.
It earns a place anyway, because athlete’s foot almost always accompanies nail infection and keeps reseeding it. Treating the skin is worthwhile even when it can’t clear the nail.
Vinegar soaks: no human evidence
The theory is that acetic acid lowers pH enough to make the nail inhospitable. There is no clinical trial showing vinegar soaks clear onychomycosis.[3]
A 20-minute soak also doesn’t meaningfully change the pH inside a keratin plate. Soaking softens the nail, which may help something else applied afterwards penetrate slightly better, and that’s the honest case for it. As a treatment in itself, no.
Baking soda: no evidence, and it contradicts the vinegar theory
Baking soda is alkaline. Vinegar is acidic. Plenty of remedy lists recommend both and credit each with working by shifting pH, in opposite directions. They can’t both be right, and neither has trial evidence for nail fungus.
Baking soda does absorb moisture and neutralize odor, which is a reasonable thing to want. It isn’t a treatment.
Oregano, thyme, and other essential oils: unproven and irritating
Carvacrol and thymol have laboratory antifungal activity. No trial has tested them on nail infections in people.
Undiluted oregano oil is caustic and causes chemical burns on skin. If you use it, dilute heavily in a carrier oil and patch test first. The idea of “rotating oils so the fungus can’t adapt” is not how antifungal resistance works and has no basis.
Garlic, mouthwash, cornmeal, urea paste: nothing
These appear constantly and none has clinical evidence for nail fungus. Urea preparations do soften thickened nails and are sometimes used by clinicians to help debride them, but softening isn’t treating.
Bleach soaks: don’t
This one circulates widely and should be ignored outright. Diluted bleach on feet causes chemical burns and skin breakdown, and on broken skin it creates exactly the wound that lets a bacterial infection in. There is no evidence it clears nail fungus.
Cleaning your shower floor with a bleach product is fine. Putting your feet in one is not.
What Actually Moves the Needle
The habits around the treatment matter more than most of the remedies above, because reinfection is what defeats people.
Treat the skin as well as the nail. Athlete’s foot and nail infection travel together, and an untreated skin infection reseeds the nail indefinitely. Persistent itching or scaling on the soles is worth addressing in its own right. See our guide to itching on the bottom of the foot.
Keep nails trimmed short and straight across, and gently reduce thickening so anything you apply has less to get through. Skip this yourself and see a podiatrist if you have diabetes or numbness in your feet.
Dry thoroughly between the toes. Rotate shoes so each pair dries fully, and use antifungal powder or spray inside them. Wear moisture-wicking socks and change them when damp. Wear something on your feet in gym showers, pools, and changing rooms. Use separate clippers for infected and healthy nails, and disinfect tools between uses.
Setting a Realistic Trial
Decide in advance how long you’ll give it and what counts as progress, because “be patient and consistent” with no endpoint is how people lose two years.
What you’re watching for is healthy nail emerging at the base, not the existing damage improving, because damaged nail doesn’t repair, it grows out. Photograph the toe monthly in the same light and from the same angle.

A fair trial is three to six months. If there’s no new clear growth at the base by then, more months won’t change it. For a small early infection at the tip of one nail, mentholated ointment or 100% tea tree oil are the two worth trying, because they’re the only two with any human data. Expect modest odds and give it three to six months.
Skip vinegar, baking soda, garlic, and mouthwash as treatments. Never soak your feet in bleach.

If no clear new growth has appeared at the base by six months, it isn’t working. Photograph the toe monthly in consistent light so you’re judging from evidence rather than impression.
I have diabetes. Can I use these?
Have the nail looked at instead. Reduced circulation and sensation mean an infection can progress to an ulcer or bone infection without you feeling it, and trimming or filing a thick nail yourself risks a wound you won’t notice.

Why do so many sites claim these remedies work?
Mostly because laboratory results get reported as if they were clinical ones. Plenty of substances kill fungus in a dish and can’t cross the nail plate on a real toe.
Slow natural improvement also gets credited to whatever someone happened to be using, and an oily ointment or a soak can improve appearance by hydrating the nail without touching the infection.
